Signs Your Child May Need Help

Mental illness does not just impact adults, it impacts children and youth too. It can be hard for parents to identify mental illness in children, because their symptoms may look different than in adults. Stigma associated with mental illness can also be a barrier for some families to talk about mental health. As a result, nearly half of children who could benefit from mental health treatment do not get the help they need.

So how do you know your child may be struggling with their mental health? Here are some common signs to watch for:

  • Sadness that lasts two weeks or more
  • Withdrawing from or avoiding social interactions
  • Hurting themself or talking about hurting themself
  • Talking about death or suicide
  • Emotional outbursts or extreme irritability
  • Out-of-control behavior that can be harmful
  • Drastic changes in mood, behavior or personality
  • Changes in eating habits
  • Losing weight
  • Having a hard time sleeping
  • Frequent headaches or stomach aches
  • Having a hard time concentrating
  • Changes in grades
  • Avoiding or missing school

If your child is showing these symptoms, do not ignore them. Mental health conditions are common and treatable. Consider talking to your child about mental health and do not be afraid to seek professional help.
